Ocean Innovation Prize stimulates marine climate mitigation

As part of the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development ("the Ocean Decade"), the Blue Climate Initiative is awarding a global ocean innovation prize worth USD 1 million to inspire, fund and support innovations that slow climate change through ocean-related strategies.

The prize is intended to further the goals of the Ocean Decade, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The prize money will be awarded to innovations that can mitigate climate change through ocean-related and knowledge-based solutions, inspired by the transformational opportunities of the Blue Climate Initiative. Proposals must include an innovative and scalable technology, practice, model, approach or idea and be commercial in nature and can be submitted by a for-profit company, a non-profit organisation or an individual. Emphasis will be placed on diversity, equality and inclusion.

Three to eight winners will receive a minimum of USD 1 million in prize money to invest in their innovations. They will also have the opportunity to join the start-up network of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Accelerator Program and will be invited to present and participate in the high-profile Blue Climate Summit in mid-2022 in French Polynesia. A larger group of approximately 16 semi-finalists (including the winners) will benefit from visibility to boost their innovations, matchmaking with experts and investors, and mentoring.

Entries can be submitted by midnight on 15 September 2021.
